When we opened Bukowski Bar in 2016, nightlife in Bratislava looked a bit different than it does today.
Clubs and discos were open until morning — that was never the problem. But bars where you could comfortably stay late into the night, have a drink, talk, and let the evening slowly unfold, were becoming rare.
We felt that the idea of a late-night bar was slowly disappearing from the city.
Not a club. Not a disco. But a bar — a place where nobody rushes you out just because it’s past midnight.
And that was exactly the kind of place we wanted to create.
We Didn’t Want a Club. We Wanted a Bar That Lives Late into the Night
From the very beginning, we knew Bukowski wasn’t meant to be a club with a dancefloor, lights, and DJs until sunrise.
We wanted a modern dive bar — a little rough around the edges, a bit chaotic, but alive. A place where people stand close to each other, have a shot, a beer, a cocktail, talk, and suddenly realize it’s much later than they expected.
Back then, that wasn’t a given.
Bars closed earlier, nightlife mostly moved into clubs. We believed the city needed another kind of nightlife as well.
So we gave it a try.
Live Music as a Natural Part of the Night
Very early on, we realized that if a bar wants to stay alive late at night, music matters.
Not as background noise, but as a reason to come.
That’s why we host live concerts every single week — today regularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Over the course of a year, dozens of bands pass through our bar:
alternative
jazz and blues
rock
revival and cover bands
80s and 90s classics
Beatles, rock, and former Czechoslovak hits
Some nights are calm, others wild. And that’s exactly how it should be.
Live music was never a marketing trick for us — it’s simply how we keep the bar alive.
Bukowski 2.0 and PRIOR: Why Neighbours Don’t Bother Us
When we opened Bukowski 2.0 in 2024 in the PRIOR building at Kamenné námestie, we knew exactly where we were going.
Right next door are Kácečko, Bohéma Bar, and Temný Ost Block — strong concepts with loyal audiences.
A lot of people told us: “Isn’t that a problem? You’re all right next to each other.”
We don’t think so.
Actually, we believe it’s a huge advantage.
Nightlife works best when it’s concentrated.
When people don’t have to travel across the city, but can naturally move, explore, and stay in one area for the whole evening.
We know each other.
We talk. We help each other.
When someone needs support, we know we can rely on one another.
Competition?
We see it more as a shared scene.
One of the Most Lively Party Areas in Bratislava
Today, we can honestly say that the space between the two PRIOR buildings — together with Kácečko — is one of the liveliest nightlife spots in Bratislava, if not the liveliest.
It’s a combination of:
several strong bars side by side
live concerts, DJs, discussions, and culture
late opening hours
a mix of locals and visitors
There’s no other place in the city where nightlife feels this concentrated and alive.
Why We Still Do It the Same Way
From Bukowski (2016) to Baudelaire (2018) and later Bukowski 2.0 (2024), we’ve always tried to do one thing:
keep the bar a place for people, not just a business.
Nightlife isn’t built by one bar alone.
It’s built by relationships, streets, neighbours, music, and trust.
And that’s exactly what we’re still trying to do today — without big words, but with respect for the city we live in.
When someone asks us where to go out at night in Bratislava, we never answer with just one place.
Nightlife is about movement. And we’re glad to be part of it.
