BOOK: Bukowski’s SHOTS Go „Naked“: Now Online and for Free!

Welcome to the digital edition series of our book, „Bukowski’s SHOTS.“
We’ve decided to make „Bukowski’s SHOTS – A Guide to Mixed Drinks“ available to the public for free. It was born during the pandemic as a way to survive tough times—both financially and mentally—and today, we are gradually releasing it in an online format.
Each installment = one chapter or section from the book, adapted for the web. At the end of every article, you’ll find a link to the next part so you can keep the flow going.
And once we get to the shots themselves, you can look forward to our personal recommendations and those classic „bar bizarre“ notes that are simply part of the Bukowski DNA.
They say the best things in life are free. At Bukowski, we’ve decided to turn that cliché into reality. Our „bible“ of bar culture, which we guarded for years and once sold online, is now being released to all of you. Chapter by chapter. Uncensored and free of charge.
That is why we decided to make our book, „Bukowski’s SHOTS – A Guide to Mixed Drinks,“ available to the public for free. It was born during the pandemic as a way to survive tough times—both financially and mentally. Now, we are publishing it online, piece by piece.
Bukowski’s SHOTS isn’t just some dry mixology guide. It’s a piece of our soul that we poured into text back when bars were triple-locked and the streets of Bratislava were haunted by silence.
When COVID Pushed Us Against the Wall (A Story of Survival)
The year was 2020. A year most of us would rather forget, but for us at Bukowski, it remains etched in our memory forever. The pandemic took everything we loved—the buzz in the courtyard, the clinking of glasses, and your energy. Only one question remained: „Will we survive?“
The book Bukowski’s SHOTS wasn’t written at some expensive mahogany desk; it was born out of pure necessity and the burning desire not to lose our minds.
  • We wrote it to keep our team together.
  • We wrote it to financially survive the greatest crisis of our era.
  • We wrote it for you, so you wouldn’t forget us.
Today, now that that weird world is (hopefully) behind us, we’ve decided to take the leap and open the book up to everyone. This book belongs to the people. We want these stories to reach everyone—from our hardcore regulars to those who are still out there looking for our bar.

Not Just Recipes, but Liquid Literature

Forget those boring internet tutorials. Our mixed drinks have a pedigree. We wanted to bring the bar’s atmosphere directly to your kitchen, your bedside table, or your balcony. In this series, you can expect literary recipes, where every shot tells its own story.
„What kind of drink would BAUDELAIRE be without burning absinthe and decadence? And how could FREEDOM taste without that harsh, honest ‚borovička‘?“
Every week, we’ll serve you a portion of text containing:
  • A juicy bar story (sometimes perhaps a bit too honest).
  • The exact recipe for the best Bukowski shots.
  • Cultural tips – what to read or listen to with each drink to make the experience complete.

Why are we doing this? Because BUKOWSKI BAR is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

These texts haven’t aged a day. You can still feel that subtle haze of jazz, the aroma of quality spirits, and the hum of conversations that don’t end until sunrise. This is a piece of our 10-year history, and we want this legacy to live on.Bukowski’s SHOTS are back—this time on your smartphones and computers. No barriers.

What’s next?

This article is just the appetizer. Soon, we’ll fire off the first chapter, and trust us, the very first shot won’t leave you cold.
Want to be part of it?

  • Follow our social media, where we’ll share every new installment.
  • Get your shakers ready; we’re going to need them.
Maybe when you mix your first drink according to our guide and close your eyes for a moment, you’ll hear jazz in the distance. Maybe you’ll feel the energy of our courtyard. Or maybe, it will just make you genuinely happy.

What today’s chapter is about

Today, we’re laying down the practical foundation without which no good shot or cocktail can exist: how to properly mix, shake, and serve. We’ll walk through the most common shaker technique step-by-step, show you simple home alternatives (stirring in a glass, the „straight way,“ or using a blender), and add a mini-overview of glassware and bar tools so you don’t get lost. At the end, we’ll make a simple syrup that will save many a drink at home. Cheers!

How to prepare and proceed: Our shot-making technique

We prepare most of our shots in a cocktail shaker. You know the one—that shiny „rattle“ bartenders love to show off with. 🙂
If you don’t have a shaker at home, any other sealable container will do just fine—ideally a metal one. Remember, you’re „rattling“ it with ice, and thin glass could crack in your hand.
Basic Technique: The Shaker (Most Common)
  1. Throw a few ice cubes into the shaker.
  2. Pour in the ingredients – start with the cheapest and end with the most expensive. (That way, if you make a mistake, you only „ruin“ the cheaper stuff.)
  3. Close the shaker and shake for at least 10 seconds. The perfect technique is hard to describe—if you want to go „pro,“ check out how the experts do it on YouTube.
  4. The shaker has a strainer at the top, so after shaking, just pour the contents into a chilled shot glass. If you’re using a different container, a small kitchen strainer will help catch the unmelted ice bits.
And that’s it. Cheers!

Other Techniques

1) Stirring (The Mixing Glass)
You can use practically any glass with thick walls.
  • Drop in a few ice cubes.
  • Add your ingredients.
  • Stir for at least 30 seconds with a bar spoon (or any long spoon you have).
  • Strain the contents through a sieve into the serving glass.
2) Straight Way (Built in the Glass)
Some cocktails are made directly in the glass they are served in:
  • Add ice to the glass.
  • Gradually pour in all the ingredients.
  • Done.
3) Blender
Frozen drinks or cocktails with fresh fruit can be made in a blender:
  • Put ingredients + ice + fruit into the blender.
  • Blend until you reach the desired consistency.

Types of Cocktail Glassware

  • Shot Glass – for our shots, we use 70 ml glasses so they aren’t filled right to the brim.
  • Rocks Glass (Old Fashioned) – a short glass with thick walls, usually up to 250 ml; crystal is the top choice here.
  • Highball – a taller glass, usually up to 350 ml, used for long drinks and larger cocktails.
  • Wine Glass – narrower for whites, wider for reds; we occasionally use these for cocktails too.
  • Coupette – an elegant stemmed glass; legend has it the bowl’s shape was inspired by a woman’s breast.
  • Martini Glass (V-shape) – similar to a coupette, but with a distinct V-shaped bowl.
  • Tiki – a ceramic mug with exotic motifs, often used for rum-based cocktails.
  • Bar „Toys“ (Essential Tools)

    • Shaker – A sealable container (metal or thick glass) used for mixing and chilling drinks.
    • Mixing Glass – Usually 750–1000 ml; used specifically for stirred cocktails.
    • Strainer – A professional bar tool; at home, a regular small kitchen sieve works just as well.
    • Jigger – A double-sided measuring tool; a graduated shot glass is a great home alternative.
    • Bar Spoon – A spoon with a long, twisted handle, sometimes featuring a fork at the other end.
    • Muddler – A thick pestle (often with a „toothed“ end) used for mashing fruit and herbs.

How to Make Simple Syrup

In some drinks, you’ll find simple syrup—essentially a sugar syrup used instead of granulated sugar because it dissolves much better.
The Process:
  • Mix sugar + an equal amount of boiling water (1:1 ratio).
  • Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Let it cool and pour it into a bottle.
Storage: It will last approximately 2–4 weeks in the refrigerator.
Cheers to health and literature! Your Bukowski Team
